If you struggle with white patches, you must book an appointment with Dr. Meenakshi and Dr. Prashant Yadav at Royal Derma Clinic.

Vitiligo is a chronic autoimmune disorder that causes loss of pigment-producing cells (melanocytes), leading to white patches on the skin. Although there is no cure for vitiligo, various treatments can help restore skin pigmentation, improve the appearance, and reduce symptoms.

Types of Vitiligo

  • Generalized Vitiligo
    1. Symmetrical Vitiligo: White patches appear on both sides of the body.
    2. Asymmetrical Vitiligo: White patches appear on one side of the body.
  • Localized Vitiligo
    1. Focal Vitiligo: White patches appear in a small, localized area.
    2. Segmental Vitiligo: White patches appear in a specific segment of the body.
  • Other Types
    1. Universal Vitiligo: White patches cover most of the body.
    2. Mixed Vitiligo: A combination of different types of vitiligo.
    3. Halo Nevus Vitiligo: A type of vitiligo that appears as a white ring around a mole or birthmark.
  • Rare Types
    1. Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada (VKH) Disease: A rare autoimmune disorder that causes vitiligo and inflammation in the eyes, ears, and brain.
    2. Alezzandrini Syndrome: A rare condition that causes vitiligo, hearing loss, and inflammation in the eyes.

Treatments for vitiligo:

     1. Medical Treatments

  • Topical Corticosteroids: Creams or ointments applied to affected areas to reduce inflammation and promote repigmentation.
  • Topical Immunomodulators: Creams or ointments that modify the immune system’s response to reduce inflammation and promote repigmentation.
  • Vitamin D Analogues: Creams or ointments that help regulate the immune system and promote repigmentation.

     2. Light Therapy

  • Narrowband UVB Phototherapy: Exposure to specific wavelengths of light to stimulate repigmentation.
  • PUVA (Psoralen + UVA) Phototherapy: A combination of a medication that makes the skin more sensitive to light and UVA exposure.
  • Excimer Laser Therapy: A targeted laser therapy that can help stimulate repigmentation.

    3. Surgical Treatments

  • Skin Grafting: Transferring healthy skin from one area of the body to affected areas.
  • Melanocyte Transplantation: Transferring melanocytes from healthy skin to affected areas.
  • Tattooing: Using tattoos to cover small areas of vitiligo.

It’s essential to consult a dermatologist to determine the best treatment plan, as each case is unique.
